Privacy Policy
This page explains plainly what Thimarcom stores, where it stores it, and what it never does. We wrote it for parents and teachers, with a short summary for children at the top.
In a few words
- We don't collect any data about you.
- No accounts, no ads, no tracking or analytics.
- What you save and what you record with your voice stays on your device.
- Your parents can see your progress on this device.
- If a link wants to take you out of the app, we ask a parent to open it.
Who we are
Thimarcom is a free charitable app for learning to read, memorize and recite the Holy Quran, for children from age four and for adults, with no ads and no subscriptions.
- Provided by: Nezir Alabsi.
- Legal form: non-profit charity project.
- Country: Sweden.
- Website: thimarcom.app
- Contact: support@ssk-appen.se
The short version
The app collects no personal data. There are no accounts and no sign-in, no ads, no analytics tools, and no third-party tracking libraries. Everything you enter in the app is saved on your own device. None of it reaches us unless you choose to send us a file (see “Backups and files you export”); apart from that, we cannot see it and we keep no copy of it.
What is stored on your device, and why
So that the app remembers your progress and works offline, it keeps the following on your device, in the storage space your browser sets aside for our site:
- Learners: the name you type (a short name or nickname is enough), whether the learner is a child or an adult, gender if you choose it (only to address them correctly in Arabic), a geometric badge, and display preferences.
- Memorization and review: the memorization plan, what was memorized each day, a review card for each memorized ayah, a simple daily activity log (what was memorized or reviewed, and for how long), and surah completion certificates.
- Learning: progress in the reading lessons, the tajweed lessons, and the lessons on etiquette and rulings, and the “My Tree” rewards (stars, fruits and stickers), plus study coins, what they bought with them for the character and the room, and claimed challenges (no money is involved; the app is free with no in-app purchases).
- Voice recordings of the learner's recitation, as described in the next section.
- Downloads: a small index of the surahs whose audio has been downloaded.
- Volunteer tools, only for those who use them: lesson studio recordings and their review verdicts, word-audio review verdicts, a reviewer's verdicts on lessons, and the name the reciter or reviewer types. These stay on the device until the volunteer chooses to export them in a file and send it to us.
- The halaqa list, on the teacher's device only: the progress cards the teacher has scanned.
These are kept in the browser's usual storage areas:
- Local databases (IndexedDB): one named eqra, holding everything listed above, and a small one named workbox-expiration, created by the offline system, holding the addresses of the stored reading-lesson and word sounds and when each was stored, so the oldest can be removed when there are too many. It holds nothing about the learner.
- Local storage (localStorage): settings (theme, font size, reciter, last page, repeat count, tajweed colours, the parents-section protection type, and the parents' PIN if parents set one, which stays on the device and is never sent anywhere), the active learner, the children's display mode, the number of “parent gate” attempts (to slow down guessing), small hints such as each learner's starting point, where to resume a long ayah and a hidden invitation to the reading lessons, each learner's progress card ID and the name chosen for the card, the volunteer tools' preferences and names, favourite hadiths, the hadith font size, a mark that the two Sahihs were downloaded for offline reading, and progress in the “My Religion” lessons for children.
- Session storage (sessionStorage): whether reviewer mode is on; it is cleared when the app is closed.
- Cache storage (Cache Storage): the app's own files so it works offline, only the recitations you have downloaded from the Downloads page (a recitation you play without downloading is not saved by the app), and the sounds of reading lessons and words once they have been played or downloaded.
We ask the browser to keep this data rather than clear it on its own when space runs low; your browser may ask you about this. The app does not use cookies.
Voice recordings and the microphone
- The microphone works only when you tap the record button, and it stops when you stop or cancel the recording or leave the screen. A single recording lasts at most three minutes.
- A learner's recordings are saved on this device only and are never uploaded anywhere.
- The app does not turn your voice into text or try to recognize who is speaking: you listen to your recitation and compare it with the reciter's.
- The last five attempts for each passage are kept; older ones are deleted automatically.
- You can delete any recording, or delete all of a learner's recordings from the Family page.
- Recordings are not included in the backup file.
- In the lesson recording studio (for volunteer reciters), the microphone turns on when the reciter taps “Turn on microphone” or the record button, stays on while the recording tab is shown so it can display the sound level, and turns off when leaving it. Studio recordings stay on the device until the reciter chooses to export them and send them to us (see “Backups and files you export”).
The camera
- The camera is used only on the Halaqa page, when a teacher taps the button to start scanning progress cards.
- Images are read on the device itself only to decode the QR code; they are not saved or sent.
- The camera stops when the teacher stops scanning, leaves the page, or switches away from the app.
The progress card and the halaqa list
- The progress card is a QR code shown on the learner's screen. It contains: the card format version, the learner's first name or a nickname the parents choose, whether the learner is a child or an adult, and the card's date; for memorization, the number of memorized ayahs, the numbers of the completed surahs (or only their count if the list is long), the number of new ayahs and of reviewed ayahs in the last seven days, and the number of ayahs due for review today; for reading, the level, the number of lessons completed and the title of the current lesson; for tajweed, the number of lessons completed. A part the learner has not started is left out. It also holds a fixed random card ID that is not derived from the device or any other data (so the teacher's device updates the same student instead of adding a new one).
- Nothing is sent over the internet: whoever scans the code with Thimarcom, or pastes its text after you copy it (such as a teacher on the Halaqa page), keeps a copy on their own device.
- So show the card only to people you trust, such as the halaqa teacher.
- The halaqa list stays on the teacher's device only, under the teacher's control; the teacher can delete entries, and it is not included in the backup file.
When the app uses the internet
After it is first opened, the app works offline. It connects only to:
- Our website: to load the app's files the first time and its updates, and the sounds of reading lessons and words.
- EveryAyah.com, delivered by the BunnyCDN content delivery network: for the reciters' ayah-by-ayah recitations, when you play a recitation you have not downloaded, or download surahs from the Downloads page. Only downloaded surahs work offline afterwards; a recitation you play without downloading is fetched from the site each time and is not saved by the app (apart from whatever the browser keeps for a while in its ordinary cache, as it does for any website).
Like any website, these servers see your device's IP address and the usual request details (such as the file requested and the browser type), because a connection cannot work without them. We add no name, identifier or learner data to these requests, and we do not use server logs to track anyone or to build profiles of users. Hosting providers usually keep short-term technical logs under their own policies, and we have no control over the logs of EveryAyah or BunnyCDN.
Links and sharing
- Some pages link to outside sources (such as tanzil.net, sunnah.com, Wikisource and licence pages). Opening one takes you out of the app to a site with its own policies.
- If the active learner is a child, or no learner has been added yet, the “parent gate” must be passed before any link out of the app opens, unless parents chose “No protection” in the settings.
- When you share an ayah or a file through your device's share menu, what you share goes to the app you choose, under that app's policies.
No third parties
The app contains no analytics tools, no ads, no advertising identifier, and no third-party libraries (SDKs) that collect data. It does not ask for your location and does not track you across websites or apps. We do not sell data or share it with anyone.
Children
- Thimarcom is designed for families, including children from age four, and we collect no data from children.
- When the active learner is a child, the “parent gate” protects the settings, the Family page, the Halaqa page, switching to other learners’ profiles and links that leave the app. Parents choose its type in the settings: a multiplication question for grown-ups (the default), a 4–6 digit PIN they set, or “No protection”. It slows young children down; it is not a security lock.
- Parents can see a child's progress on the same device, and can manage or delete the child's data.
Backups and files you export
- The backup is a file you create yourself from the Family page; it is saved on your device. It contains: learners, memorization plans and daily memorization, review cards, the activity log, certificates, progress in the reading, tajweed and etiquette lessons, the “My Tree” rewards, study coins with what was bought with them and claimed challenges, and each learner's progress card ID and the name chosen for it (so the teacher's device still recognizes the same student after a restore on another device).
- It does not contain: voice recordings, downloaded audio or its index, settings, volunteer tool data, or the halaqa list.
- The file is not encrypted, so keep it somewhere safe. Sending it to anyone (for example on WhatsApp) is your choice, under the policies of the app you send it with.
- If you are a volunteer and choose to send us a studio recordings file or a review file, we receive what it contains: the name you typed, and the recordings or the verdicts and notes. We use it only to prepare and review Thimarcom's lessons: accepted recordings become part of the lessons, and a reviewer's name appears under the lessons they approved.
How long data is kept, and how to delete it
- Your data stays on your device until you delete it, or until the browser or system clears it.
- Deleting a learner on the Family page removes their plan, progress, review cards, activity, certificates and recordings from the device.
- You can also delete just the recordings, and delete downloaded audio from the Downloads page.
- To erase everything at once, clear this site's data in your browser settings, and remove the app if you installed it on your home screen.
- Because we keep no copy, we cannot restore anything that is deleted, so keep a backup if you want one.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, data protection laws (such as the GDPR in Europe and children's privacy laws) may give you rights to access, correct and delete your data. Because we hold no data about you (apart from files a volunteer chooses to send us), all of this is in your hands on your device, using the options above. For any privacy question, or about a file you sent us: support@ssk-appen.se
Changes to this policy
- If we change this policy, we will update the “last updated” date at the top and point out important changes inside the app.
- If we ever add a feature that sends data off the device (such as syncing between devices), it will be optional, explained before it is turned on, and will ask for a parent's consent where that is required.
Content sources
The Quranic text, tafsir, recitations, tajweed data and fonts have their own sources and licences, listed in the “About” section of Settings.
